Consultative Information Day
13th November 2007

Arising from the 7th Annual Breaking Through Conference the need for a local support network for practitioners working in the youth sector was voiced by some delegates.

In response, Breaking Through, an all Ireland Network for the support of practitioners working with young people at risk have undertaken to initiate the development of local support networks in areas throughout the country. The Breaking Through Network in collaboration with Sara Kickham, Co. Wexford Partnership is pleased to invite you to a consultative/information day for practitioners working in Co. Wexford.

The purpose of this meeting is to:

  • Bring together people working in the youth sector in Co. Wexford.
  • Listen to their concerns as workers
  • Facilitate the sharing of these concerns
  • Provide a format for discussion
  • Initiate the development of  a local support network for people working with young people at risk

Those formally invited were asked to pass this information to colleagues who they thought would be interested in attending

Report on Consultative/ Information Day
13th November 2007

Following an invitation extended by Breaking Through in collaboration with Sara Kickham Co. Wexford Partnership to attend a meeting of people working in the youth sector, 24 people representing a cross section of organisations and individuals working with young people at risk in Co. Wexford gathered together in the Riverside Park Hotel Enniscorthy on 13th November 2007.

Don Murphy, Manager Co. Wexford Partnership opened the meeting by welcoming Breaking Through and all the practitioners present to the meeting.

Marie Halligan, National Development Officer, Breaking Through gave a brief history of Breaking Through.

Paul Flynn, Chairman Breaking Through and Manager of Crosscare Aftercare Services invited everyone present to introduce themselves. Paul then presented an overview of what a support network could offer. He also pointed out that the network would belong to the group therefore the vision of the network would come from the group following today’s meeting. Paul then invited the group to divide into 4 smaller groups
For discussion. One person from each group volunteered to report back to the main group
 
Three questions were posted on the board for discussion within the smaller groups.

  • Why did you come here today?
  • What do you want from a Local Support Network?
  • What are the local issues to be addressed by a Local Support Network?

Here is a sample of answers to the three questions.

What do you want from a Local Support Network?

  • Access to outside facilitators/speakers and training
  • Learn more about “best practice”
  • Share information regarding funding
  • Opportunity for collective government lobbying
  • Break down barriers
  • Sharing Resources
  • A neutral ground for debate
  • Safe place to talk/offload
  • A Skills database
  • Newsletters
  • E-group
  • Support for lone workers

 
What are the Local Issues?

    • Isolation of rural workers/clients
    • Lack of services in some areas
    • Lack of support for freelance workers
    • Breaking the cycle of disadvantage
    • Referrals-Information sharing
    • Early school leaving
    • Teen pregnancy
    • Sexual health issues

Where to from here?
The consensus of opinion from the meeting showed that there is a definite interest in setting up a local support network. How and what format it will take will be agreed at the next meeting The following are some ideas coming from this meeting to be considered.

  • Agreed to set up a network.
  • Agreed to meet monthly initially Jan-March 2008
  • Agreed to meet quarterly after that
  • Agreed to invite other colleagues to attend next meeting for wider representation
  • Agenda to come from group for next meeting
  • Agreed Breaking Through will circulate information before next meeting
  • Agreed Breaking Through will support setting up both financially and logistically
  • Agreed Enniscorthy is a good location
